7 myths about online degrees in India

Online degrees in India have changed faster than their reputation. More universities now offer them, and more working people take them, but the old myths still put people off good options. Here are the seven we hear most often.

Myth 1: “An online degree isn’t valid in India.”

Fact: a degree from a UGC-DEB entitled university is legally equivalent to a regular degree for jobs, government exams and higher study (UGC regulations, 2020). Myth 2: “Employers reject online degrees.”

Fact: employers and government recruiters look at the university’s recognition, not how the classes were delivered. An online degree from a UGC-entitled university with a good NAAC grade is accepted for private-sector jobs and for UPSC, SSC and banking recruitment. Some PSU posts ask for a full-time degree, so read the notification first. Some employers abroad still prefer campus degrees for senior roles, so the university’s name matters more if you plan to work overseas.

Myth 3: “Online degrees are lower quality, or easier.”

Fact: an entitled university follows the same syllabus online, with proctored exams. Its NAAC grade reflects quality whatever the mode of study, which is why we show it for every university we cover.

Myth 4: “There’s no career support or placement help.”

Partly true. Many online programmes include career services, live classes and job portals. But online study does not give you the campus placement drives that full-time students get, and a university’s campus placement figures are not online outcomes. For a working professional, the degree is mainly a qualification and skills upgrade, and that is usually the point.

Myth 5: “It’s the same as a fake or unrecognised university.”

Fact: the UGC-DEB entitlement list exists precisely to separate the two. If a university is on deb.ugc.ac.in for your programme in online mode, it is recognised. If it is not, don’t enrol.

Myth 6: “Online is only for people who couldn’t get in elsewhere.”

Fact: most people who choose an online degree are working professionals who want a qualification without leaving their job. For them, online is the practical choice, not a fallback.

Myth 7: “A foreign online degree is automatically recognised in India.”

Fact: this one works the other way. A foreign online degree is not automatically recognised in India; for government jobs or further study at an Indian university it usually needs AIU equivalence. It can be valuable for a global career, but know the rule first: foreign online MBAs from India.

Each of these myths is settled by two questions: is the university UGC-DEB entitled for your programme, and what is its NAAC grade? If both check out, an online degree is a valid degree, and far easier to fit around a job.
